Pulau Payar: Getting There & Around by Zemien

There is no accommodation on the island, so you can only do daytrips. In a way this helps preserve the cleanliness of the area. Anyhow, the 2 most popular base for trips out to Pulau Payar would be Pulau Langkawi and Pulau Pinang (Penang).

Although I only took the catamaran ferry from Penang, I'm guessing it is almost the same with trips originating from Langkawi (but with a shorter journey).

For those based in Penang, you'll enter the pier from an old side gate. Just look for the famous Jubilee clock tower and it's right opposite. You can park your car at the nearby Fort Cornwallis parking for RM7/day.

Langkawi Coral Marine Park ~ by millymin.com

Wanna try guessing? :) I was actually at Swettenham Pier upon boarding when this picture was taken, where we were shipped to Pulau Payar, one of the interesting islands before Langkawi. Heart the clear blue sky. Simply awesome can! This would be a mini getaway for myself and my bunch of friends as well as I believe they might be in a similar condition as I do; burnout!

Pulau Payar, A Place For Everyone ~ by Wkfoo.com

We have always heard people talking about Pulau Payar and how beautiful the island is but have you ever wondered who was responsible for it? It is none other than Langkawi Coral. To be honest I only took notice of Pulau Payar because of Emily. She couldn’t stop talking about Pulau Payar and when I asked her what was so special about that island she said “Just comela, don’t ask so much”.

As we made our move towards the boat, I could hear a couple of foreign languages echoing such as Japanese, Greek, Arabic, and a few more that I don’t even know. I was happy and confident that this will be a good trip simply because it has managed to attract so many foreign tourist. Imagine going to an island where you only see locals and yourself, theoretically that impression would just simply mean the island is not attractive enough or in the modern world’s term, sucks. So off we go and Jep was our tour guide of the day. To me, he is simply the best tour guide I’ve ever met not only he knew how to make us excited but he knows every little inch of this island. Ok that’s beside the point, for now.

Preserving coral reefs in Pulau Payar.

Few months ago, my company makes a trip a.k.a scuba diving certification in Pulau Payar. It’s a very wonderful trip. At the end of the day 90% of the participant pass the test & received the license as Open Scuba Water course. Congratulation to all & thanks to my company for making such a wonderful activity.
This was not the 1st time to visit the Island. As a ‘anak langkawi’ I’ve been visiting the Island several times in fact before the place was open for public. There’s a lot of improvement noticed on the Island. Will comment some of the observation I’ve made during the two days visit.
Among the things I would like to comment are the presences of ‘white elephant’ projects on the Island. What were they thinking when approving such villa & chalet to be built on a Marine Park. From the feedback I received some of the coral reefs were damage when building material was brought in.
Another thing is, I’m not sure whether the marine parks impose charges to visit Pulau Payar. If not I think they can do so to cater the arising number of tourist to the areas. Its good that the authorities only allow two scuba diving operator.
Marine Park authorities should have put a sign for tourist discouraging them to feed the fish. Near beaches we can see people are feeding the small sharks & small fishes. This in fact can damage the ecosystems which will leads the fishes will be to dependent on the tourist for food.
The recent banned of some of the diversity in Pulau Payar are most welcome. During the Open Water course I see it from my eyes how some of the dive site experiencing ‘coral bleaching’ as well as depletion of coral reefs compared when I was there years ago. (to snorkel)
Below are among the suggestion to improve the situation on Payar Island :-
- Impose a rotation on the dive site (weekly schedule)
- Permanent banned of the dive site (by tourist) which having coral bleaching more than 20% of areas. Only allow research dive activity to check the extend of the damage. The chalet to be converted as information centre.
- Put up a signage not to allow feeding of the fish.
- For 1st timer diver or for conducting course purposes only allow certain sites for diving. I experience 1st hand that inexperience diver will only damage the corals by steeping on the coral. (Don’t make the coral as the victim due to our inexperience to control the bouncy).
- The unused chalet to use as research centre or exhibits area.
- Imposed charges for tourist who visits the place. $1.00 USD or RM 3.00 for locals.
- Limit the number of tourists visiting the island daily.
It was a very memorable experience. When you can go down as a scuba diver, you’ll learn to appreciate the biodiversity of the underwater world. So what can we do now to preserve it for future generations to come? Let us think & make a plan to make Pulau Payar coral reefs sustain for our children's children.

Pulau Payar tercemar teruk

Two Fishermen Rescued After Three Days At Sea ~ Pulau Payar

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 8 (Bernama) --

Two Thai fishermen who used a gas cylinder to keep themselves afloat over the past three days in the sea off Langkawi, were rescued by a ferry this afternoon. The duo, in their 40s, were in good health at the time of the rescue at 3.45pm, by the Penang-bound ferry from Langkawi. However, the skipper of their boat was missing.

A police spokesman said the foreigners were handed over to the immigration department to facilitate investigations. He said the fishermen's boat was damaged after it was believed to have struck a coral reef about five nautical miles from Pulau Payar, during choppy sea condition.
