Proposal To Re-Include Langkawi In LTdL Hailed

LANGKAWI, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- Langkawi member of parliament Datuk Paduka Abu Bakar Taib welcomed the proposal to re-include Langkawi in the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) cycling tour next year. Abu Bakar said the re-inclusion was in line with the tour's original objective to promote the resort island to the world. Recently, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who mooted the prestigious cycling tour when he was the prime minister, lamented the fact that Langkawi was no longer featured in the tour which was named after the duty-free island.LTdL chief operating officer Mohamed Salleh said yesterday that LTdL management had agreed in principle to re-include Langkawi in the tour's calendar.

The last time the tour was held in the island was in 2003 where cyclists raced for a distance of 9.5km around the island. Abu Bakar is confident that LTdL would bring about tremendous benefit to the island and its people. Langkawi Recreation Club president Datuk Mansor Ismail and Kedah Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents president Phisol Ishal also welcomed the proposal saying it would bring about more visitors to the island. The 2010 LTdL, from March 1-7, covers a distance of 1,001.8km on the mainland and involves 120 cyclists from 20 teams.-- BERNAMA
