Air force set to seal deals for radars, sensors
RMAF chief says no plans to buy jet fighters and other assets due to budget constraints
THE Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is expected to seal several contracts at this year's Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition (Lima 2011).
Air force chief General Tan Sri Rodzali Daud said among the contracts lined up were for the acquisition of radars, sensors and communication equipment, which would beef up the country's air defence.
"Several letters of offer and acceptance will be inked during the exhibition. However, owing to budget constraints, the government is unable to approve the procurement of larger assets for the air force for the time being.
"This includes the purchase of new-generation aircraft and defence equipment."

Eurofighter Typhoon Visits LIMA for First Time
16:55 GMT, November 26, 2011
The Eurofighter Typhoon will be flying across the skies of Langkawi for
the first time as a UK Royal Air Force aircraft participates in one of
the most important global defence and security shows, LIMA 2011, which
takes place in Langkawi, Malaysia, from 6-10 December.
Just a few days after particpating at the Dubai Air Show and with aircraft still in Malaysia following Exercise BERSAMA LIMA, the Typhoon will excite the crowds with displays demonstrating its incredible agility and speed.
Four RAF Typhoon aircraft from 6 Squadron flew from their base in Scotland to the Royal Malaysian Air Force airbase in Butterworth, Malaysia to take part in Exercise BERSAMA LIMA marking the 40th Anniversary of the Five Powers Defence Arrangement (FPDA), and whilst in the region wanted to reflect the importance of the air force to air force relationship by attending this prestigious exhibition.
Eurofighter Typhoon is the world’s most advanced multi-role combat aircraft. It meets current and future fast combat air needs and provides best-in-class combat effectiveness and operational flexibility. The Typhoon is capable of being deployed in the full spectrum of air operations from air policing and peace support, through to high intensity conflict. Typhoon aircraft have recently been deployed on operations and have performed exceptionally well, demonstrating outstanding levels of availability and maintainability.

Navy sends 2 vessels to int'l maritime exhibition
MANILA, Philippines - The Navy dispatched two of its vessels to Malaysia yesterday to showcase its capabilities in an international maritime and aerospace exhibition that will be held in the island resort of Langkawi from Dec. 6 to 10.
Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Omar Tonsay said the Navy sent its Jacinto Class patrol vessel, BRP Emilio Jacinto (PS-35), and logistic support ship, BRP Dagupan City (LC-550) with 262 sailors.
“The activity is foreseen as a way of building stronger ties between the participating countries in terms of maritime defense and international diplomatic engagements,” Tonsay said.
Navy Capt. Virme Torralba will head the Philippine contingent to the exhibition.
The Philippine Navy is still classified as a brown navy, while the naval forces of developed countries are classified as blue navy. It has, however, been actively joining naval exercises in the region to enhance its capabilities.
Brown navies are only capable of launching territorial defense and conducting maritime patrols.
Blue navies, on the other hand, like those of the United States and China, can deploy its warships to international waters for longer naval engagements.
The exhibition, dubbed as “Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA),” also serves as a venue for manufacturers of maritime and aerospace technologies to promote their new products to senior government officials, both civil and military, as well as to industry leaders in the Asia-Pacific region.
Since 1991, dozens of leading maritime and aerospace manufacturers have been participating in the annual sea and air exhibition hosted by the Malaysian government.
Aside from showcasing the latest technological advancements, this year’s exhibition will also include cultural exchanges and training opportunities for all participants.

M’sians thriving after returning
MALAYSIANS who returned home under the Talent Corporation’s
Returning Expert programme are now serving in various sectors under the
National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) including the finance, oil, gas and
energy sectors, the Dewan was told.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk S.K. Devamany said others were in the communications content, infrastructure, electric and electronic sectors.
“Some who are professionals and highly qualified have been appointed as chief executives of listed companies or as members of senior management in multinational companies,” he said in reply to Datuk Paduka Abu Bakar Taib (BN-Langkawi).
A total of 576 qualified Malaysians had returned home under the programme since January, he said, adding that since the programme was taken over by Talent Corporation, professionals had been provided with incentives.
To further attract qualified Malaysians abroad, he said Talent Corporation initiated outreach programmes to develop its network with Malaysians living abroad in Australia, the United States and Britain.
He said the programmes involved linking up with industries in the country to showcase professional job opportunities and this followed the implementation of the Government’s Economic Transformation Programme.
Devamany added that those who continued living abroad were encouraged to contribute their expertise “wherever they are”.
“As an example, Prof Danny Quah, a lecturer at the renowned London School of Economics, has contributed towards the New Economic Model as a member of the National Economic Action Council,” he noted.
Devamany said Talent Corporation’s incentives under its Returning Expert programme were aimed at facilitating the return of the professionals to serve the nation.

Berjaya Air now flies to Langkawi
Dato Bakar, YB Rawi & Berjaya Air GM |
BERJAYA Air Sdn Bhd added a new destination to its network last Friday, commencing four weekly flights from Subang to Langkawi and opening up yet another holiday destination for its customers.
At the launching ceremony of its scheduled flight service held at Langkawi International Airport, Berjaya Air director Datuk Azlan Meah Ahmad Meah said there has been rising demand for air transport services in the country.
“Malaysia recorded a 25% increase in tourist arrivals so far this
year, and the increasing demand from tourists for air services prompted
us to start the scheduled flights to the island.
“This initiative is in line with government efforts to develop
Langkawi, particularly the Langkawi Development Authority’s (Lada)
efforts to actively develop tourism facilities in the island with the
government allocation of RM420 million as announced in Budget 2012,” he
added.Berjaya Air will operate the ATR-72 on the new route.
Langkawi MP Datuk Paduka Abu Bakar Taib congratulated Berjaya Air for its achievement and said the flights would contribute to Langkawi’s development as a premier tourist destination.
Azlan Meah said the carrier’s unique selling point was that it did not only provide air services but also offered holiday packages to customers.
“Being under Berjaya Corp Bhd, we have many connections that help us
create great local and international holiday packages for the entire
family, and we are always open to working together with others in the
tourism industry.”
“With the budget allocation and effort of the state government and
Lada, we see a long-term potential for Langkawi to become a ‘Geopark’
tourist destination, which will attract high tourist arrivals in the
future,” he said.Berjaya Air, a niche carrier operating out of the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, also flies to Tioman, Redang, Pangkor and Koh Samui, Thailand.
It also offers direct flights from Singapore to Tioman and Redang.

Raja Muda 2011: the dash to Langkawi
At around 50nm – depending on the position of
the start line - the last Raja Muda passage race from Penang to
Langkawi is the shortest leg of the regatta. This one really is a
straight line course, wind-dependent. It has become a feature of this
year’s regatta that there’s more breeze at the finish than at the start,
and yesterday followed on in spades.
Sunshine replaced the previous day’s grey overcast, but the wind was notably absent at start time 1200hrs. After a little jilling around and admiring the Penang scenery, the RO sent off the well-known ‘big black Police RIB’ on a windseeking mission, all the way out to the second inbound port channel markers. Still nothing. Cutting a long, slow and hot story short, racing started for Class 6 in a fitful 3-4kts from the east at 1320hrs with just 47nm to the finish. Eveline seemed to be having trouble getting to the line…

Ironmen at World Cup Asia in Langkawi, Malaysia
Picture from dye paintball blog. |
Our trip started off with a very long flight from Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur and then finally to Langkawi. Our hosts were gracious enough to set us up with some local sightseeing tours where we got to see some of the mangroves, eagle feeding and their fantastic beaches. We also were able to take cable cars up to the top of the highest peak on Langkawi for some amazing views. We also were able to eat with the King and Princess of Malaysia for a festive dinner.
Our tournament started off with a match against Xfox/Xtioneers the Malaysian representative that ended with a 3-2 victory for us. The next match was against Assassalas from Gabon Africa, and was also a 4-0 win for us. Our final match of the Prelims was against a strong STK from Australia who we also beat 4-0. On sunday we were up against Datis from Iran who had just won the Division one crown, we also beat them 4-0. The final match was against TonTon’s which we lost in a close fought battle 4-2. Congratulations o the Tontons for their first place victory in the ICC division.
The Ironmen would like to thank everyone for the nice event the put on at WCA and we look forward to coming back next year.

Successful event & will be yearly event not to be missed.. My journey towards Ironman immortality
ANILA, Philippines - My story started four years ago at the finish
line of Ironman Malaysia 2008 in Langkawi — a full-distance Ironman that
involved a 3.8k open-sea swim, a 180k bike race
and 42k run — all within a 17-hour cutoff. I trained for almost 20
weeks for that race, which took me 17 hours and six minutes to complete.
Yes, I missed the cutoff by a painful six minutes! They gave me the
finisher’s medal, but I was unable to earn the distinction of being
called Ironman. Thus began an obsession that would take me four years to
conquer.
For the uninitiated, the full Ironman is probably the most grueling endurance sport there is. It starts with a 3.8k swim, which is like swimming the length of EDSA from the Buendia intersection to Roxas Blvd, within a 2:15 period. Immediately after that, one has to mount a bike and ride for 180k. This is like biking from SM Mall of Asia to the foot of Baguio in La Union. The cutoff for this leg is about eight hours. If one does not make it to the cutoff, he will be pulled out of the course and the day ends for him. Finally, after the tough swim and long bike ride, one caps the race with a full 42k marathon. This is equivalent to running from La Union and heading back to Pampanga. In the Philippines, the only official Ironman race is a 70.3 miler, which is sometimes called a “half Ironman.”
It is an extremely painful and exhausting endeavor for sure, but that’s what makes it appealing. It is the challenge of pushing yourself to the extreme limits of physical — and oftentimes even psychological — capacity. Once you cross the finish line, the announcer calls out your name and shouts “You are an Ironman!” To hardcore triathletes, this is the ultimate confirmation that one is indeed a member of the rare breed of people who have completed the distance.
In Langkawi, I was totally devastated to learn that I had just missed the cutoff by a mere six minutes. This meant I had to carve out another 20 weeks of my life to train for another Ironman and go through the same agonizing experience to lay claim to the distinction of having conquered the extreme challenge.

Ting plans multi-billion ringgit project for Langkawi
Langkawi: Langkawi's economic fortunes as a
tourist destination may be enhanced if Sarawak businessman Tan Sri Ting
Pek Khiing has his way.
He is proposing a reclamation of some 80 hectares of land for the
region's biggest marina centre, along with residential and commercial
properties.
The proposed multi-billion ringgit "Port Langkasuka" project will comprise nine parcels of land containing among others, a golf course, resort and private villas.
"A RM200 million breakwater was built in the mid-1990s as a basis for this proposed development.
"I am hopeful that we can obtain the necessary approvals from the state government to proceed," he told reporters after former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad opened the Four Points by Sheraton Langkawi Resort here yesterday.
The resort, which was previously known as the Langkasuka Beach Resort,
underwent a RM30 million refurbishment prior to the rebranding.
The resort is owned by Global Upline Sdn Bhd - which also owns the Four Points by Sheraton property in Kuching, Sarawak.
Ting, who is Global Upline's group adviser, was instrumental in building Langkawi's first five-star resort Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort 20 years ago and also the Delima Resort Langkawi.
Dr Mahathir, who during his tenure as prime minister worked closely with Ting, is raising the island's profile as a preferred tourism destination, said that the duty-free island still has a lot of potential to be developed.
"There is still a lot of potential for resorts, as we have not used the mountains (to build resorts). Since the weather is cool up there, why not build a mountain resort?
"Perhaps mountain bike racing can be introduced," he noted, and said the five-year 'hiatus' which was taken after his tenure by the authorities in promoting Langkawi, can be addressed by allocating budgets to market the island better.
"Build another port, since there is demand for it and we have many good locations where the port can be built," Dr Mahathir added.

Berjaya Air heads to Langkawi and Pangkor Island
BERJAYA Air will be adding two new destinations to their lists this November with their expansion programme.
The new destinations — Langkawi and Pangkor were revealed at a poolside party by the airline company at Berjaya Times Square Hotel in Kuala Lumpur recently.
As for Langkawi, there will be four flights per week direct from Subang airport effective Nov 18.
Lee said Langkawi would be the best market for them as the local government had been given a budget of RM420mil under the Langkawi Five-Year Tourism Development Master Plan.
The budget was to re-structure the Langkawi Development Authority and the establishment of a forest ranger team, which was an important process towards improving the tourism value of the place.
Lee also said they have the Dash 7 aircraft that was ideal for island operation with its short take-off and landing performance.
Berjaya Air has added the ATR72 planes as well and was the first airline to have the planes into Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- Developer Rahsia Estates Sdn Bhd is
in talks with several international hoteliers to manage its Rahsia
Estates Resort, Residences and Spa in Langkawi, its chief executive
officer Hanizah Abdul Hamid said.
She said the hotelier will be responsible for managing both the resort and the residential units.
The project, with RM300 million gross development value, is expected to commence in the first quarter and to be undertaken in three phases, she said.
Speaking to reporters after the official launch of Langkawi's first mixed-development hospitality brand, she said the project will take around 40 months to complete and will be operational by 2014.
"Infrastructural work and earthworks on the resort, situated on a 6.075ha property in the mukim of Kedawang, will begin in February 2012," she added.
Earlier, she also signed a memorandum of understanding with Sun Jin Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, which has been appointed as the project's lead contractor.
The event was witnessed by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The resort, which is 15 minutes' drive south-east from the airport, is divided into three precincts.
Precinct 1 comprises Phases 1 and 2, called Tree Top Villas, and consists of 119 units of high-end serviced apartments of 60.39, 139.35 and 278.70 sq m.
Precinct 2, the five-star section, comprises 119 suite hotels and spa while Precinct 3 or Cabana Villas will have 31 luxury resort-styled villas with private pools and landscaped gardens.

Wow, this is a new one. Never knew this one coming.. Anyway.. More hotel means more jobs opportunity. Just hope that hotelier give a chance to locals rather than outsiders.. I think looking at the current development there might be a need to open up hotel hospitality course in Langkawi..

No action taken on 32 recommendations - Langkawi International Shooting Range Malaysia
The AG’s report for 2008, among others, pointed out that no action
had been taken to implement plans for the Langkawi International
Shooting Range Malaysia complex.
The Home Ministry was informed that discussions had been held with the Youth and Sports Ministry and the National Sports Council to turn the complex into a tourist attraction or be handed over to the ministry but no decision had been made.
The ministry was supposed to turn the complex into the Transnational Organised Crime Academy (Matoc) but policy decisions were still at the discussion stage.

Been here once & try shoot the guns. The complex is huge & its a waste looking at how the complex was rarely use by the government. There's ways to turn the complex. Just make it as tourist attraction. If the government dont know how to use it sub let the whole facility to people who are interested.
There're Malaysian company's making guns & bullet. Probably they might take the iniciate & make it as additional tourist attraction. The compound area can also be converted to Paintball areas. Nearby land as well. Give the company who runs the place incentive & tax relief until its running well..

Flat out in Langkawi
Liz Porter chooses the Malaysian island for a swim-spa-slumber holiday.
My teenage daughter and I were desperate for an exotic break. We weren't looking for an "eat, pray, love" quest to Bali. Or a place with bars so hip you might be in some barely-on-the-map Melbourne laneway. Part of the charm of being somewhere foreign is that they do things differently. We just wanted somewhere reliably hot and sunny for a spa, swim, room service, book-reading kind of holiday.
I remembered Langkawi from a visit to its main island of Pulau Langkawi in 1976, when there was no tourist development on this archipelago of 99 islands off the west coast of Malaysia and the only access was a 30-kilometre ferry trip from the little port town of Kuala Perlis.
Advertisement: Story continues below
I could recall only the stock tropical-paradise images:
palm trees lining long, sandy beaches; jungle; a scenic hilly interior. I
remember wading in clear warm water - and someone suggesting that at
certain low tides, one could walk to the next island.Thirty-five years later, I had difficulty finding new and reliable information. The Lonely Planet guide to Malaysia devotes only three pages to Langkawi. But some recent visitors there had described it as "like Bali 30 years ago". As someone lucky enough to first visit Bali when Sanur's Bali Hyatt was the only major resort and Legian had no electricity, I liked that idea.

A-G: Langkawi auditorium roof poorly constructed
PETALING JAYA: The roof of a newly constructed auditorium in Langkawi
was found to be leaking and was not constructed according to
specifications.
According to the Auditor-General’s Report, the contractor used wood for the roof structure instead of steel as specified by the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada).
In Feb 2005, Lada approved RM4.5mil under the Ninth Malaysia Plan for the construction of the additional building as an auditorium that serves as a theatre for cultural performances and a silat teachers’ house to increase the attractiveness of Kota Mahsuri complexes.
“Auditors’ visits found the auditorium roof trusses were slanting to the right and might not be able to withstand the weight of the roof,” the report said.
No comprehensive soil investigation was done to identify the suitability of the land before the auditorium and silat teachers’ house design was drawn up, the report said.
“This causes high water retention in the auditoriums’ orchestra pit,” it said.
In reply, the Treasury said the water retention issue had been settled using a “water proofing” method and the floor level had been raised.
“However, the 1.5m water in the pit was caused by rain water that entered through an incomplete roof and not due to the rise of underground water,” it said, adding that the Works Department, which is now in charge of the project, had been informed of the problem.

Leniency Can Help Avert Delay In Langkawi Development - Mahathir
LANGKAWI, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir
Mohamad today expressed the hope for leniency in the government's
implementation of the Langkawi Five-Year Tourism Development Master Plan
so as to avert any delay in the utilisation of the development
allocation.
He said any development project often took a long time for implementation, especially when it came to acquisition of land.
"If there is leniency, we can achieve what we want to do. Acquiring land itself can take up to a year. So, the allocation remains unspent.
"I believe the Kedah government can approve land applications quickly but there are government procedures to follow. This takes time," he told Bernama.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, in tabling Budget 2012, announced that the RM420-million Langkawi Five-Year Tourism Development Master Plan would be launched to promote tourist arrivals and domestic tourism.
Among the initiatives are restructuring the Langkawi Development Authority, setting up a park rangers unit and upgrading museums, beaches and small businesses.

AL :-
Agree with Tun. Don't be to haste to finish the 420million for Langkawi. Every project need careful planning & execution. Great & detailed project need time. The takeover of land alone can take a year if everything goes smooth. Just that please dont persue the stupid idea of building the bridge to Langkawi...

Budget 2012 boost to property and construction sectors - Langkawi Comment
REALTY CHECK
By DATUK ABDUL RAHIM RAHMAN
(what he's comment with regards to Langkawi 420millition budget & property & construction sectors)
As one of the NKEAs, the tourism industry will also receive a shot in the arm. For example, RM420mil will be allocated to launch the Langkawi Five Year Tourism Development Master Plan. Among the initiatives to be undertaken are the restructuring of the Langkawi Development Authority, setting up a park rangers unit, upgrading museums, beaches and small businesses as well as providing a more efficient transportation system. In my view, to create a more supportive environment for the tourism industry, it is of high importance for the Government to also re-look at current restrictions on buying and investing in properties in Langkawi. The island has great potential; however, more needs to be done to attract hotel operators as well as investment in tourist-related activities as the current regulations are considered as “unfriendly” to foreign buyers or investors.
AL :-
Respect his opinion but here are mine.
Langkawi don't need lavish & high attraction in terms of foreign buyers or investors. More hotel international operators just means that less & less beach accessible to the public. Look what happen to Andaman area's, Tanjung Rhu areas, Five Season & several other beaches. If i'm not mistaken the law said the beach belongs to the public. Anyone can use the beach & not consider as trespassing.
p/s: Dont want langkawi to be like penang or bali..

Laawnnging Around Langkawi
It felt like we did a lot today as we hired a scooter, and I was
designated driver so took us off for a drive. It was a pig of a bike to
ride actually and so we didn't go over 60kph as it all seemed a little
hairy. We were very keen to go up the cable car on the north west of Langkawi
and it didn't take all that long to get there along some windy roads
and pretty scenery, including driving around the bottom of the runway of
the airport. We turned up up 'Oriental Village' which is the least
oriental looking place I've ever seen, and bought our 30RM ticket up the
cable car. The highest point seems to be around 700m above sea level.
there are 2 stops, a first stop at one peak and then you just get back
on the car and get to the 2nd point. (writing in hindsight a little
story about a mild annoyance involving an arab at this point in my trip -
in tomorrow's entry)
We went up to the highest point where we had a 360 view of the island and all the many smaller islands in the area, including a large one that was essentially Thailand
. The other amazing thing about going up the cable car is that there is a curved sky bridge up there between a couple of other peaks which is very cool and offers a different view on things, including a long way down!

LIMA 2011 Puchase of New Aircraft?
RSAF Boeing AH-64 Apache from Singapore Armed Forces ( SAF ) |
Well, i've always in opinion Malaysia needs this kind of Helicopter rather than too relaying on aircraft such as Sukhoi or MIG's. Why? We are a very small country & our terrain are hilly mountain with thick forest. Having this kind of helicopter will give a durability to maneuver through the terrain un spotted. After all this helicopter can have a long rage missile which can cater long distance enemy. :).. Just my thoughts.
To RMAF. If you decide to buy one.. Give me a free ride will yea.. :)

Brace for wet Weather - Langkawi Weather Forecast
Malaysia Meteorological Department stated that Northern states of Malaysia will be having a wet weather & possibility of flood on certain areas.
Not sure on how will it be effected Langkawi however, i suggest all tourist & visitors need be aware. The weather in Malaysia is unpredictable. At one part it might be wet & after 5-10 minute drive the weather suddenly different.
For those who wish to rent a car, please check that it is in good condition (tyre condition etc2). For those who rent a bike, make sure you stop during heavy rain. Langkawi have a lot of trees on the road side. There are possibility of falling trees hazard.
There's expected to be an increased of wave height & wind speed. Wave expected to be from 1.0m to 1.5m. If you wish to go for island hopping tour make sure all the safety life jacket provided. Don't be hesitate to go back if you see the weather condition beginning to change from good to bad. Most of the island hopping operator aware about this & if the operator decide to stop the tour, don't object because they know the weather well.
Anyway, for those who's been planning to come & already in Langkawi during wet season. Make an alternative plan to round the island by going to dry places such as Underwater World, Craft Center, Buffalo Park, Crocodile Farm etc2.
Avoid slippery waterfall & if you still wish to go there, be cautious. DONT let yourself be in one of the statistic of falling from the waterfall especially in Telaga Tujuh (Seven Well). Have fun & be cautious during this wet season.
From time to time I suggest you closely monitor the weather condition here & plan your activity accordingly.
