M’sians thriving after returning

MALAYSIANS who returned home under the Talent Cor­poration’s Returning Expert programme are now serving in various sectors under the National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) including the finance, oil, gas and energy sectors, the Dewan was told.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk S.K. Devamany said others were in the communications content, infrastructure, electric and electronic sectors.
“Some who are professionals and highly qualified have been appointed as chief executives of listed companies or as members of senior management in multinational companies,” he said in reply to Datuk Paduka Abu Bakar Taib (BN-Langkawi).

A total of 576 qualified Malaysians had returned home under the programme since January, he said, adding that since the programme was taken over by Talent Corporation, professionals had been provided with incentives.
To further attract qualified Malaysians abroad, he said Talent Corporation initiated outreach programmes to develop its network with Malaysians living abroad in Australia, the United States and Britain.
He said the programmes in­­volved linking up with industries in the country to showcase professional job opportunities and this followed the implementation of the Go­­vernment’s Eco­nomic Transfor­mation Prog­ramme.

Devamany added that those who continued living abroad were encouraged to contribute their expertise “wherever they are”.
“As an example, Prof Danny Quah, a lecturer at the renowned London School of Economics, has contributed towards the New Economic Model as a member of the National Economic Action Council,” he noted.
Devamany said Talent Cor­poration’s incentives under its Returning Expert programme were aimed at facilitating the return of the professionals to serve the nation.

Berjaya Air now flies to Langkawi

BERJAYA Air Sdn Bhd added a new destination to its network last Friday, commencing four weekly flights from Subang to Langkawi and opening up yet another holiday destination for its customers.
At the launching ceremony of its scheduled flight service held at Langkawi International Airport, Berjaya Air director Datuk Azlan Meah Ahmad Meah said there has been rising demand for air transport services in the country.

“Malaysia recorded a 25% increase in tourist arrivals so far this year, and the increasing demand from tourists for air services prompted us to start the scheduled flights to the island.

“This initiative is in line with government efforts to develop Langkawi, particularly the Langkawi Development Authority’s (Lada) efforts to actively develop tourism facilities in the island with the government allocation of RM420 million as announced in Budget 2012,” he added.
Berjaya Air will operate the ATR-72 on the new route.

Langkawi MP Datuk Paduka Abu Bakar Taib congratulated Berjaya Air for its achievement and said the flights would contribute to Langkawi’s development as a premier tourist destination.
Azlan Meah said the carrier’s unique selling point was that it did not only provide air services but also offered holiday packages to customers.

“Being under Berjaya Corp Bhd, we have many connections that help us create great local and international holiday packages for the entire family, and we are always open to working together with others in the tourism industry.”

“With the budget allocation and effort of the state government and Lada, we see a long-term potential for Langkawi to become a ‘Geopark’ tourist destination, which will attract high tourist arrivals in the future,” he said.

Berjaya Air, a niche carrier operating out of the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, also flies to Tioman, Redang, Pangkor and Koh Samui, Thailand.
It also offers direct flights from Singapore to Tioman and Redang.

Pantai Cenang Jetty Will Benefit 300 Fishermen

LANGKAWI, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- The RM9 million Pantai Cenang fish landing jetty, here, when completed next year will benefit more than 300 fishermen, said Kedah Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) director Mohamad Noor Had.

He said the allocation was approved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when he visited the area last year.

The construction of the jetty began in October. It will have a fish landing site and wave breakers.

A seafood restaurant will also be built at the jetty.

Raja Muda 2011: the dash to Langkawi

At around 50nm – depending on the position of the start line - the last Raja Muda passage race from Penang to Langkawi is the shortest leg of the regatta. This one really is a straight line course, wind-dependent. It has become a feature of this year’s regatta that there’s more breeze at the finish than at the start, and yesterday followed on in spades.

Sunshine replaced the previous day’s grey overcast, but the wind was notably absent at start time 1200hrs. After a little jilling around and admiring the Penang scenery, the RO sent off the well-known ‘big black Police RIB’ on a windseeking mission, all the way out to the second inbound port channel markers. Still nothing. Cutting a long, slow and hot story short, racing started for Class 6 in a fitful 3-4kts from the east at 1320hrs with just 47nm to the finish. Eveline seemed to be having trouble getting to the line…

Ironmen at World Cup Asia in Langkawi, Malaysia

The Ironmen set off to Langkawi Malaysia for the World cup Asia event on november 11- 13. We were invited there to represent the USA in the Intercontinental Cup Division of the Tournament. This division featured many teams such as, TonTons from France, Reapers from South Africa, Xfox/Xtioners from Malaysia, Assassalas from Africa, STK from Australia, Datis from Iran and a few others. There were also tons of teams competing in all of the divisional levels.

Our trip started off with a very long flight from Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur and then finally to Langkawi. Our hosts were gracious enough to set us up with some local sightseeing tours where we got to see some of the mangroves, eagle feeding and their fantastic beaches. We also were able to take cable cars up to the top of the highest peak on Langkawi for some amazing views. We also were able to eat with the King and Princess of Malaysia for a festive dinner.

Our tournament started off with a match against Xfox/Xtioneers the Malaysian representative that ended with a 3-2 victory for us. The next match was against Assassalas from Gabon Africa, and was also a 4-0 win for us. Our final match of the Prelims was against a strong STK from Australia who we also beat 4-0. On sunday we were up against Datis from Iran who had just won the Division one crown, we also beat them 4-0. The final match was against TonTon’s which we lost in a close fought battle 4-2. Congratulations o the Tontons for their first place victory in the ICC division.
The Ironmen would like to thank everyone for the nice event the put on at WCA and we look forward to coming back next year.

My journey towards Ironman immortality

ANILA, Philippines - My story started four years ago at the finish line of Ironman Malaysia 2008 in Langkawi — a full-distance Ironman that involved a 3.8k open-sea swim, a 180k bike race and 42k run — all within a 17-hour cutoff. I trained for almost 20 weeks for that race, which took me 17 hours and six minutes to complete. Yes, I missed the cutoff by a painful six minutes! They gave me the finisher’s medal, but I was unable to earn the distinction of being called Ironman. Thus began an obsession that would take me four years to conquer.
For the uninitiated, the full Ironman is probably the most grueling endurance sport there is. It starts with a 3.8k swim, which is like swimming the length of EDSA from the Buendia intersection to Roxas Blvd, within a 2:15 period. Immediately after that, one has to mount a bike and ride for 180k. This is like biking from SM Mall of Asia to the foot of Baguio in La Union. The cutoff for this leg is about eight hours. If one does not make it to the cutoff, he will be pulled out of the course and the day ends for him. Finally, after the tough swim and long bike ride, one caps the race with a full 42k marathon. This is equivalent to running from La Union and heading back to Pampanga. In the Philippines, the only official Ironman race is a 70.3 miler, which is sometimes called a “half Ironman.”
It is an extremely painful and exhausting endeavor for sure, but that’s what makes it appealing. It is the challenge of pushing yourself to the extreme limits of physical — and oftentimes even psychological — capacity. Once you cross the finish line, the announcer calls out your name and shouts “You are an Ironman!” To hardcore triathletes, this is the ultimate confirmation that one is indeed a member of the rare breed of people who have completed the distance.
In Langkawi, I was totally devastated to learn that I had just missed the cutoff by a mere six minutes. This meant I had to carve out another 20 weeks of my life to train for another Ironman and go through the same agonizing experience to lay claim to the distinction of having conquered the extreme challenge.

Ting plans multi-billion ringgit project for Langkawi

Langkawi: Langkawi's economic fortunes as a tourist destination may be enhanced if Sarawak businessman Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing has his way.
He is proposing a reclamation of some 80 hectares of land for the region's biggest marina centre, along with residential and commercial properties.

The proposed multi-billion ringgit "Port Langkasuka" project will comprise nine parcels of land containing among others, a golf course, resort and private villas.

"A RM200 million breakwater was built in the mid-1990s as a basis for this proposed development.

"I am hopeful that we can obtain the necessary approvals from the state government to proceed," he told reporters after former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad opened the Four Points by Sheraton Langkawi Resort here yesterday.

The resort, which was previously known as the Langkasuka Beach Resort, underwent a RM30 million refurbishment prior to the rebranding.

The resort is owned by Global Upline Sdn Bhd - which also owns the Four Points by Sheraton property in Kuching, Sarawak.

Ting, who is Global Upline's group adviser, was instrumental in building Langkawi's first five-star resort Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort 20 years ago and also the Delima Resort Langkawi.

Dr Mahathir, who during his tenure as prime minister worked closely with Ting, is raising the island's profile as a preferred tourism destination, said that the duty-free island still has a lot of potential to be developed.

"There is still a lot of potential for resorts, as we have not used the mountains (to build resorts). Since the weather is cool up there, why not build a mountain resort?

"Perhaps mountain bike racing can be introduced," he noted, and said the five-year 'hiatus' which was taken after his tenure by the authorities in promoting Langkawi, can be addressed by allocating budgets to market the island better.

"Build another port, since there is demand for it and we have many good locations where the port can be built," Dr Mahathir added.

Place will be built near the breakwater barrier.  A new development. Its a reclamation project. Hopefully full EIA report shall be made to check the effect to the environment.

Berjaya Air heads to Langkawi and Pangkor Island

BERJAYA Air will be adding two new destinations to their lists this November with their expansion programme.

The new destinations — Langkawi and Pangkor were revealed at a poolside party by the airline company at Berjaya Times Square Hotel in Kuala Lumpur recently.

As for Langkawi, there will be four flights per week direct from Subang airport effective Nov 18.
Lee said Langkawi would be the best market for them as the local government had been given a budget of RM420mil under the Langkawi Five-Year Tourism Development Master Plan.
The budget was to re-structure the Langkawi Development Authority and the establishment of a forest ranger team, which was an important process towards improving the tourism value of the place.

Lee also said they have the Dash 7 aircraft that was ideal for island operation with its short take-off and landing performance.
Berjaya Air has added the ATR72 planes as well and was the first airline to have the planes into Malaysia.

International Hotelier To Manage Rahsia Estates Resort

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- Developer Rahsia Estates Sdn Bhd is in talks with several international hoteliers to manage its Rahsia Estates Resort, Residences and Spa in Langkawi, its chief executive officer Hanizah Abdul Hamid said.

She said the hotelier will be responsible for managing both the resort and the residential units.

The project, with RM300 million gross development value, is expected to commence in the first quarter and to be undertaken in three phases, she said.

Speaking to reporters after the official launch of Langkawi's first mixed-development hospitality brand, she said the project will take around 40 months to complete and will be operational by 2014.

"Infrastructural work and earthworks on the resort, situated on a 6.075ha property in the mukim of Kedawang, will begin in February 2012," she added.

Earlier, she also signed a memorandum of understanding with Sun Jin Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, which has been appointed as the project's lead contractor.

The event was witnessed by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The resort, which is 15 minutes' drive south-east from the airport, is divided into three precincts.

Precinct 1 comprises Phases 1 and 2, called Tree Top Villas, and consists of 119 units of high-end serviced apartments of 60.39, 139.35 and 278.70 sq m.

Precinct 2, the five-star section, comprises 119 suite hotels and spa while Precinct 3 or Cabana Villas will have 31 luxury resort-styled villas with private pools and landscaped gardens.

LIMA 2011 To Be The Best In Its Series - Zahid Hamidi

ANGKAWI, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- The 11th edition of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) Exhibition next month will become the best in its series, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi said.

He said the exhibition, which scheduled for Dec 6 till 10, would see an overall improvement in terms of participation of exhibitors, aircrafts and vessels.

"A total of 403 exhibitors from 35 countries had confirmed their participations in LIMA 2011, which is an increase of merely 25 per cent from the 2009 edition," he told a press conference after chairing the preparation meeting for LIMA 2011 with the relevant agencies here.

Zahid said the participation of aircrafts in the aerospace segment had also increased to 26 aircrafts this year as compared to 11 in 2009.

Among the aircrafts are Sukhoi (Malaysia), F-18 Super Hornet (Australia) and Eurofighter Typhoon (United Kingdom), he said.

Apart from that, he said Malaysia's second submarine, KD Tun Abdul Razak, and 11 Royal Malaysian Navy-owned vessels, as well as 12 foreign warships, including guided-missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur from the United States, RSS Supreme (Singapore) and HMAS Glenelg (Australia) would also add more colours to the maritime segment to be held at Awana Porto Malai.

Zahid said 38,000 trade visitors and 45,000 members of the public were expected to throng the event.

He also announced that the ticket price for members of the public for the aerospace exhibition in Dewan Mahsuri, Padang Mat Sirat on Dec 9 and 10, had been reduced to RM10 as compared to RM30 previously, while the admission for maritime exhibition at Awana Porto Malai would be free of charge.
