Langkawi fishermen benefit from PM's vacation at the island

LANGKAWI Feb 16 — Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak”s private vacation in Pulau Langkawi has brought benefits to the fishermen at Kampung Sungai Chenang, here when they were ”presented” with the approval of an immediate allocation of RM7 million for the construction of a new jetty.
At an informal meeting with about 100 residents of the fishing village, the Prime Minister had announced the allocation after observing the difficulties faced by the fishermen in taking their boats in and out to the river mouth.

"Two nights ago, Datuk Jo (Johari Baharom, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry) had requested that I visit this area because the river is too narrow and it”s difficult for the boats to move in and out to sea.
"After having seen the situation, I announced the immediate allocation of RM7 million to build a new jetty and I hope with the construction of the new jetty, the income of the fishermen here will also increase,”
he said at the meeting.
Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, today concluded their three-day private vacation on the resort island.

The Prime Minister also said that he wanted the pollution at the river to be resolved immediately by the sewerage company, IWK Sdn Bhd.
He said the unofficial visit to the fishing village was in line with his approach of friendly visits to find out the problems of the people and be closer to them.
Najib said that through such visits, he felt more comfortable in meeting the people as it was done without any protocol involved.
The Sungai Chenang fishing village was among the areas hit by the tsunami at the end of 2004.
