LANGKAWI BIRDING & FOTOFEST 2011 25th to 27th November 2011

OPENPRESS) October 06, 2011 -- Malaysia's Langkawi region is to play host to a celebration of birds and wildlife during the Langkawi Birding and Fotofest 2011.

To be held between November 25th and 27th across the Langkawi archipelago, the event will take full advantage of the natural beauty and diverse ecological conditions in the area, with a range of different activities on offer.

Talks and workshops on conservation, photography and eco-tourism are to be held, as well as various stands selling products and services aimed at wildlife enthusiasts.

Kids' activities include an art competition and face painting, while various guided walks and tours are available to those wishing to see impressive specimens out in the wild.

However, the main events are the bird race and photography competition, which will see participants competing for cash prizes.

The bird race challenges ornithology fans to travel to designated sites to spot and record as many different species as they can within a time limit.

Meanwhile, the photography competition will see keen shutterbugs snapping candid photos of native Langkawi species, with winning entries appearing in a Wildlife of Langkawi calendar that will be sold to future visitors.

Mystery bird: brown hawk-owl, Ninox scutulata

Brown hawk-owl, Ninox scutulata, also sometimes known as the brown boobook, photographed on one of the 99 islands that make up the archipelago, Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah, Malaysia, SouthEast Asia.

Question: This Malaysian mystery bird may actually be one of three nearly-identical species. What is the current basis that some ornithologists have for elevating this bird to a separate species?

Response: This is an adult brown hawk-owl, Ninox scutulata, a fairly common species in Malaysia and throughout much of SouthEast Asia. Some ornithologists argue that this bird is one of several cryptic species. They recently split this species complex into three species; N. scutulata, N. randi and N. japonica in 2002 based on consistent vocal differences within the Ninox scutulata complex. However, the prevailing opinion is that this bird is not part of a complex of cryptic species because these vocal differences are not accompanied by matching morphological differences. Additionally, it is difficult to judge just how great are the vocal differences and to decide whether they represent more than dialect differences between resident and migratory populations of a single species. At this point, brown hawk-owl's identity remains unchanged until further work has been completed. My guess is that at least some of this work will include DNA analyses.

White Bellied Sea Eagle - Burung Helang Langkawi

Picture of the day. White bellied sea eagle featured in Langkawi. Found in Langkawi Rainforest. For those bird lovers, this eagle quite rare to find in Langkawi. In Australia this bird is under Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The nest is a large deep bowl constructed of sticks and branches, and generally sited in large trees overlooking bodies of water. Cliffs are also suitable nesting sites, while those nests built directly on the ground are located on islands. That is why Langkawi is among the best place for the type of eagle breeds.

Great resolution picture & thanks for sharing the lovely picture (cjacksonuk77- more pictures here)

Filled with natural wonders ~ The Star

LANGKAWI is the only place in the country to spot the Mountain Hawk Eagle and Brown Winged Kingfisher and it is the easiest place in Malaysia to see the Wreathed Hornbill, Great Hornbill and Oriental Pied Hornbill.
Naturist and birding enthusiast Irshad Mobarak said that on Gunung Raya, avid bird watchers were guaranteed to catch a glimpse of the hornbills on any given day.
