Langkawi Penang Family Trip 2011 by Michelle

But if you are looking for a place to buy souvenirs like batik cloths, keychains, snacks and so on this would be the place to be! There is a long stretch of stalls leading to the entrance of Beras Terbakar! The things there are cheaper than elsewhere.

Batik cloths are sold from RM10 per piece! You can find keychains that are sold in bundle of 10 for the price of RM10! Lots of t-shirts too price starting from RM10. Med Ass bought a cute baby tee for her boyfriend's cousin for RM10 too!!

Next place was Makam Mahsuri. Entrance fee for Malaysian adults and children are RM5 and RM2.50 respectively. I think the entrance fee for foreigner wouldn't differ much.

My Experience in Langkawi by Hui-e

A friend and I stayed at The Datai back in August. It was an absolutely memorable trip. Service was impeccable, and the setting was breathtaking. At the main lobby level, you look out past lush rainforest surrounding a pool, and beyond that to the sparkling sea. To the right of the main pool there is a large fig tree so I spent all my time at the main lobby looking out for hornbills and was rewarded on a few occasions.

It's even better when the fig tree is fruiting....I have seen Great Hornbills there before on a prior trip, flying from branch to branch.

A leisurely walk down to the beach will take you past the spa and some mangroves, before emerging from the trees onto a secluded bay with a long stretch of sand. The Datai has a chilled out beach club and swimming pool there. We spent a few hours lounging under the trees, reading, napping and snacking. But look out for jellyfish....we got stung a little while swimming in the sea and immediately went to the beach club where the friendly staff had some vinegar on hand to pour over the sting.

One of the best things about The Datai are the nature walks by Irshad Mubarak. Irshad is one of those people whom you wished was one of your personal friends because an hour with him increases your IQ tremendously. He regales hotel guests with stories not just about nature, but in many ways how they are related to key historical and political events. He conducts the morning walk at 730 or 8am and an evening walk at about 6 ish. These walks are around the hotel grounds as well as a short stretch outside the hotel on the main road.

It was amazing how much we saw and learned in those few hours, even if the location was only around the hotel. We saw alot, from dusky leaf langurs, to asian fairy bluebirds, white bellied sea eagles, brahminy kites, to the very rare and reclusive resident tarantula (!!) and Colugo (a kind of lemur). Irshad also gave wonderful insights to the plantlife around the hotel and pointed out some very interesting flowers....like a type of orchid where, when in bloom, resembles pigeons!

It was unfortunate my stay was short, otherwise Langkawi has much to offer the nature lover. In a previous trip I climbed up the Seven Wells and to my delight at the top there were many hornbills circling around. There were also several hiking trails near The Datai that I would definitely do on my next trip, but in dry weather when there are fewer leeches.

The Datai was sold recently to a local Malaysian company, so I really hope they upkeep the standards there. It would be a real pity for that property to fall into a state of poor maintenance typically associated with locally owned hotels (no offence to Malaysians, but I think you would agree with me).

Also, with the recent announcement of the Malaysian government wanting to promote Langkawi strongly as a tourist destination, hopefully it will not mean development at the expense of the island's ecological richness.

Thanks for sharing you honest experience.

Langkawi Island, Malaysia - Chasing Mirages

Because I have such a huge backlog of pictures and experiences to share, and I don’t have time to make such involved galleries as I did for Inle Lake and Bagan, I’m going to try something new – a lightning round of posts.
For each location that I visited, I’ll create a post including 5 pictures or less, choosing the sights and experiences that most deeply impressed me.  The only exceptions I’ll make are for stories with an environmental theme.  In those cases I may include more than 5 pictures.
Here’s the first one – Langkawi Island, Malaysia.  Langkawi is located on the northwest coast of peninsular Malaysia.  It’s a well an over-developed island paradise, with extensive white-sand beaches, waterfalls, mountains, and plenty of clear blue seas for watersports.  As soon as you get off the ferry, rent a Kia hatchback or a scooter and the island is yours!

The other great thing about Langkawi is that it’s the only place in Malaysia where alcohol is duty free.
The first picture, above, shows  a viewing bridge at the top of the Langkawi cable car.  From the bridge I could see much of the island as well as the limitless blue sea.  But the best part of standing on the bridge wasn’t the view.  It was closing my eyes and letting the sound and touch of the sea breeze overwhelm my senses, feeling as though I was hovering in between that opening in the mountains, high above the canyon below.

Interesting blog from Chasing Mirages.. Please refer here for details..

AL :-
The one interest me is not the blog itself but the comments. Most of the viewers is environmentalist. Most of them have an opinion about Langkawi. Some of the words is quite outrages & make me wonder is the environmental issue it that bad in Langkawi compared to Bali or Phuket? Anyway.. Interesting blog & comments..

Out to Sea @ Berjaya Langkawi Resort Malaysia!

Staying at the Berjaya Langkawi Resort in Malaysia is a great way to spend a relaxing beach holiday with your loved ones and friends!

In August 2011, my wife and I spent three fun-filled days and luxurious nights at the popular Berjaya Langkawi Resort in Malaysia.

But we didn’t restrict ourselves to just the resort’s private beach and its facilities.

Senior and adventurous

MY cousins and I are travel buffs. We visited Langkawi recently, and our wonderful experience there can best be described by the saying, “One good turn deserves another.”
Langkawi, as travellers know, is a historical place. It’s also hot like the rest of the country. Since the most cooling and serene spot on the island is up in the mountain, we decided to take a cable car up. It was 3pm when we reached the top.

At 710m above sea level, the place was misty, cold and very relaxing. We saw a walking track and six elderly persons struggling up the peak. Without hesitation, we walked down to offer help. There were two pakcik and four makcik.
The thin, cold air must have made them breathless; we felt the same way, too. The three of us took two rounds to help all of them up.

The senior citizens were very appreciative, and we felt like heroines. Later, they took the cable car down, while we continued to enjoy the cool air. Two hours later, we went back down.
Because it was a little chilly that evening, we decided to have some hot, spicy tomyam. Unfortunately, the restaurant famous for this Thai specialty was full, and the queue was long.
Disappointed, we started to walk away. Suddenly, I felt a pair of hands grabbing my arm. It was one of the makcik we had met up in the mountain. She insisted that we join them at their 10-seater table and paid for our dinner. The food was good. We learnt from them that each of the pakcik had brought along his two wives.

They were travel buffs, too, and had travelled to many countries.
When we thanked them for the wonderful dinner, one makcik smiled and said to us in English: “One good turn deserves another.”
We were impressed. They were lovely.

Travel: Savvy traveller

THIS WEEK’S WINNER : ABDUL MALIK SIKKANDAR in Oriental Village, Langkawi

MUST DO
Oriental Village is the entrance to the famous Langkawi Cable Car. Don’t leave the village without trying this thrilling ride. The cable car is a remarkable engineering feat that brings people to the top of Gunung Mat Cincang. The views include the magnificent forest below as well as Telaga Tujuh waterfalls. Get down at the middle and top viewing stations to enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the Andaman Sea and Langkawi Island from an altitude of 700m above sea level.

Then brave yourself to walk on the amazing 125m long suspension bridge to experience the feeling of walking in the clouds!

When you’re back on the ground, check out Oriental Village’s latest attraction — Tiger! Tiger! Gallery & Exhibit. Other attractions include paddle boat rides, elephant rides, deer park and playground for children to enjoy.

AVOID
Don’t shop before taking the cable car ride. It’s difficult to lug around bags while embarking and disembarking from the small cable cars that can only comfortably accommodate six adults each. Furthermore, it may take up to two hours from the moment you buy the ticket to riding the cable car. The entire ride and viewing on the mountain-top stations may take some time too. Also, visit the washroom at the base station near the ticket counter before taking the ride.

GOOD EATS
Snacks are aplenty at Oriental Village. There are also proper dining places with a choice of Thai, Japanese or local fare. Snacks and burgers are sold at the top station but at slightly higher prices.

TOP SHOP
The shops are quite good, especially during sale season, with almost everything from beachwear and handicraft to branded goods. There is also The Zon duty free shopping chain where you can get chocolates and many other items at lower prices.

INSIDER TIPS
There is a huge discount for MyKad holders for cable car rides and other attractions. So do remember to bring your MyKad, even for your children. As for the cable car ride, it can be quite tiring to queue for hours but sometimes, solo travellers or small groups of two or three persons may be grouped to fill empty seats. So keep an ear out for these ad hoc announcements. You may just be lucky and enjoy the ride earlier than you thought you would!

Great tips for travelers to Langkawi.

Mangroves and mangrove dwellers, Langkawi, Malaysia

Pic & post by Dasmanul
The first couple of days of my recent visit to Malaysia were spent on Langkawi, and on our first day we did a guided tour of the mangroves, a strange and fascinating eco system of its own. As we were told, very important for Earth's CO2 balance and, sadly but not surprisingly, highly endangered by human activities. I thought I'd share a few pictures with you. Not all of them came out as well as I would have liked from a technical point of few, but I still find them enjoyable.

This eagle was sitting far overhead - I think the pic came out not too bad for being shot handheld from a boat.

AL :- Interesting post & story from dasmanul. Its from a dpreview forum which members can share experience & lovely pictures.. Great & honest review.

Langkawi Island by Musemono

Hey y'all. Last weekend (it was Christmas holidays), I decided to re-visit Langkawi Island. The last time I went there was 8 years ago, so I had a very vague idea how it was and pretty curious this time around. Langkawi is an island in Kedah state (the same state I was born in), about an hour by airplane from Kuala Lumpur. It's located on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia, quite near to Thailand. Oh it's also accessible via ferries.

I rented a cute lil Malaysian car, called Kancil (mousedeer) for about RM70 a day from the airport counter. A car will help a lot to move my holiday butt around, especially on a large and relatively undeveloped island like this one.

Trip to Langkawi by Rames Studios

Red Tomato Menu by Rames Studios
On the next day, we went for island hoping + swim @ the beach. Weather was so cold can DIE!! but we had so much fun ahha. On this island got damn a lots of monkeys! Do you know I almost got killed cos of them? :P Really.

Well, the story goes like this... I came down from the boat and waited for the rest to come down. Junn asked me if I can help him hold the junk foods. I said yes. Later on, there was this huge monkey came towards me, tried to grab the junk food! Everyone was panic but not me lol. I was trying to avoid him by walking a lil bit fast, but the monkey manage to poke a hole on the plastic and half of the stuff in it started to drop one by one! My initial idea was to throw it to the sea so that it wont be able to get it. While I was walking, one of the boat came towards me (I didn't see it coming cos I was facing the opposite side -_-" + the boatman thought I know the boat is coming towards me! Sweat!!). This is the moment I thought SOMETHING gonna happen! I turn back to see why is everyone shouting "go awayy!!!"

More info please refer his blog here.

I never seen such amazing blog. The template are superb & the pictures.. Well, you need to see it for yourself. Such an artistic blog. :) One thing for sure he really did enjoy being in Langkawi.

Taking A Break In Langkawi by Sunny Cookie

Was glad we stayed at Pantai Chenang because according to the locals, it is the most happening place at night...something like the night market at Penang's Batu Ferringhi. Had dinner and walked around, CoolTeen managed to buy some interesting T-shirts and hubby bought a nice linen white shirt for Chinese New Year.

The next morning we got up early and visited the Langkawi Cable Car which was about 30 minutes' drive away. We reached there at 9am but there were already people queuing up at the ticket counter, which opens at 10am. I really dislike cable car rides and this one is really scary because of the very steep incline, but the view from the top of the hill made up for it...a cool and very windy place, sometimes the gust of wind is so strong that you feel you might be blown off the viewing platform!

Langkawi Nature Discovery Package by Noweating.com

Two weeks ago I joined a one-day “Langkawi Nature Discovery” package to Langkawi– an island north of Penang. The package was offered by Langkawi Coral– a Langkawi tour agent in Penang. It had been decades since I visited the island. Even though Langkawi is not as well developed as Penang island, it is in fact bigger than Penang, and even Singapore!

According to the tour guide, the reason it is not well developed is due to the distance from mainland. It took one hour to travel from mainland, or 3 hours from Penang island by sea, which is soul-torturing! Things will be different if there is a bridge built between mainland and Langkawi.

I just love how the picture moves in his blog. Nice picture mate.

For the Love of Langkawi by Lanh14

“The majority of Malay/Muslims from the rural areas are still poor but now for the religious conscious residents, they have headaces in trying to educate their children in an environment they had no idea some 20 years ago. Nowadays entertainment outlets including bars and spas are just a stone’s throw away from their homes. Even tiny stores owned by Malays, have beers in their refrigerators for sale. I had seen and scolded some Malays teenagers when they tried to buy the drinks.".

Read full concern here ..

Anaklangkawi :-
Apa yg dikatakan oleh blogger ni adalah benar. Kepesatan pembangunan Langkawi tidak dinikmati sepenuhnya oleh org2 Langkawi. Terutama penduduk. Sehinggakan byk org langkawi masih di takuk sama. Masalah sosial pula makin meningkat. Kita perlu berhenti sejenak & buat muhasabah diri utk melihat benda2 ni.
Kita kadang2 tak nampak sbb kita disana tapi bila org luar yg komen maka itulah hakikatnya..

Itulah persoalan yg perlu kita teliti & lihat.

Lady in Langkawi

After spending Christmas in Singapore, the next stop on my winter sun adventure was Malaysia. It wasn’t just any part of Malaysia, though. It was Langkawi. Located off the west coast of the country near the border with Thailand, Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands. The largest, called Langkawi, is where I spent the past three days.

Langkawi is known for its beautiful beaches, lush forests, picturesque waterfalls, and great water sports. It is also home to some pretty impressive wildlife, several species of which I became rather attached to during my stay in the northern part of the island.

Anaklangkawi :-
What interest me about this blog was the article also been selected by Lonely planet & publish in their website. Kudos Lady.. Nice picture & article

This post is to summarize the day time activities that we did during our last week Langkawi trip. I will let the picture do most of the talking.
We went to Taman Agro - Teknologi, Stesen Mardi Langkawi, because my husband found out from the map that there got free seasonal fruit for visitors. Cheap skate ho?

Langkawi Underwaterworld by mybabybay.com

The last time I set foot here was back in 2005. I was a little disappointed then because the Penguin section was under renovation.

Today, the place didn’t change much but I was impressed that the Penguin section is fairly big, 2 big sections for 2 types of Penguin. However when I looked at the Penguin, I feel sad for them because they are caged. They looked bored. Anyway that’s was the major part of the attraction in Langkawi Underwater World.

The rest were the usual sea creatures like coral fish, stingray, sharks, jelly fish and all types of fishes.
My children like to see the Penguin but only for a short while as they were distracted by a digital light game that shines on the ground. That was the most fun they have in there.

Please refer to her full article & nice pictures here..

Anaklangkawi :-

I must say i agree with her with regards to this place should be a place you need to go when u visit langkawi.

Langkawi Five-O by Firiz

All my frustration during 4 weeks of STPM examination were paid off. Next day after the exam, my family and I were boarding on AK5203 flight to KL at 6.15am. During the flight, I ate Chicken Rice. The taste was not bad! We arrived at LCCT around 8.15 am. My elder brother and I rushed to the counter for early check-in. While waiting for the flight, my elder brother, sister and I went to McDonald for early breakfast. At 10.00 am, we took AK5322 flight to Langkawi Island. Finally 1 hour later, our plane landed at the 'Island of the Eagle'.

We rented a Nissan Grand Livinia car for RM300 (2 nights). At noon, we reached Hotel Bahagia in the heart of Kuah town. Waiting for check-in, we went sight-seeing around the town before headed to Billion Supermarket for duty-free shopping. We bought a lot of chocolates. Then we ate Nasi Kandar at a Mamak restaurant near Pekan Rabu. We went to the waterfront nearby to snap some photos.

Langkawi Day 2 ~by I Blog Too

As promised, Day 2! :)

So the day started real early with us having complimentary breakfast at the apartment’s lobby. It’s the buffet style but nothing really fancy, really. It was a bit too heavy for our liking, they served mee goreng, kuey teow goreng, and stuff.

We headed up north (I think) to the Oriental Village for the cable car ride. It was drizzling all morning so we were just trying our luck to see if the cable car is operating.

After a few wrong turns and a beautiful stretch of seaside scenery, we finally reached the Oriental Village. :)

Please read full article here..
