Malaysia shortlists new jet fighters

LANGKAWI - Malaysia has shortlisted five manufacturers as it seeks to buy 18 combat aircraft by 2015 to replace its ageing fleet of Russian-made MIG-29s, the defence minister said on Thursday.

The choice was between the British-backed Eurofighter Typhoon, Sweden's SAAB JAS-39 Gripen, France's Dassault Aviation Rafale, Boeing's F/A 18E/F Super Hornet and Russia's Sukhoi Su-30, Zahid Hamidi told Reuters.
"We've made the shortlist," Zahid said on the sidelines of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition. "We don't know the cost yet."

RAF Typhoons to soar over Langkawi at LIMA Air Show

BAE Systems announced recently that it welcomes the British Royal Air Force’s (RAF) plans to send a number of its Typhoon aircraft, from the UK to support the upcoming Five Powers Defence Agreement Exercise hosted by Malaysia in April and also the Langkawi International Maritime & Air (LIMA 2013) Show on March 26.

BAE Systems is one of four European industrial partners in the four-nation Eurofighter programme.
The company, with its regional office based in Kuala Lumpur, is taking the lead on behalf of the four partners to offer its Typhoon to the Royal Malaysia Air Force over the coming years.
