Langkawi expects 4 million tourists next year

LANGKAWI: Some four million tourists are expected to flock into Langkawi next year during the 2014 Visit Malaysia year.

"Last year, we had more than three million tourists visiting Langkawi and next year, we are sure that we will see more than four million tourists with rapid development taking place."
Dr Mahathir advised the tourism industry players not to be too complacent.

"I believe there is always room for improvement and we can do it with some effort," he said at the dialogue session "Santai bersama Tun Dr Mahathir" at My Hotel here yesterday.

Langkawi Road to Enviromental Shame!!

LANGKAWI: Environmentalists are concerned over a road project, currently being built along Pantai Kok's rainforest-covered hill which they said is "sacrificing" century-old trees as well as marine lives along the island's shores.

Naturalist Irshad Mobarak said the road project is actually along a forest on a limestone hill which is also close to a mangrove forest and a popular tourist spot.

In an interview with The Mole Irshad said: “Langkawi has many rare species which is only seen in this part of the world and it will go extinct if the island is overdeveloped.”

“The island's biodiversity is amazing and eco-tourism is what draws tourists to the island. Islands work by different rules, if a habitat is lost, species will decline, “ he said.

Meanwhile, a source who lives and work on the island said the estimated cost of the road project is RM22 million and stretches about 1.2km long.

The project which started about a month ago is said to be built as a short cut to enable tourist to get to a nearby resort.

The source also said there were no proper signage’s to indicate that the area was under construction.

Irshad who is quite popular in Langkawi, having lived there for 26 years and championing the preservation of the island’s beauty and natural habitat, said the rainforest is vital in mitigating air pollution.

A member of the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), Irshad said developers should consider the environment and its natural aesthetics when undertaking their projects.

“When building roads, they must consider the wildlife, plants and marine lives, such as under planning for fisheries,’’ he said.

He also said local authorities must have better legislation and tighter enforcement for illegal loggings and poaching.

Another concerned environmentalist who wished to remain anonymous said sand from the road works which is being built, if unattended, could flow into the sea and badly affect marine lives.

“When the sand from the road works flows into the sea, the coral life will be affected.”

"Why do people come to Langkawi? People come here to unwind and enjoy its nature. Ecotourism is the fastest growing industry on the island. We are losing species just as we sit here."

The environmentalist who is passionate in preserving the island's marine life said while more stringent rules could be implemented, rules were still broken.

“People break the rules...competition between businesses will see bad practices in development projects. In terms of rules, it works well overseas. It can be done through many ways including through significant fines.’’

“Development is not necessary a bad thing, and I am not anti-development but I am definitely anti-ignorance. Everyone including the local authorities should be taught on preserving nature at all cost for the future generations," he added.

PUTTING LANGKAWI ON EAGLES’ WINGS

Pulau Langkawi, the ‘Jewel of Kedah’, accorded the World Geopark status by UNESCO in 2007, holds great promise for the tourism industry in Malaysia. In a recent interview with the Top 10 of Malaysia, Tan Sri Khalid Ramli, the Chief Executive Officer of the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) gave his insights into the Langkawi Tourism Blueprint and his visions to make it a success.

T10 : What would you describe as the “second curve for Langkawi Development Authority” when the Langkawi Tourism Blueprint (2011-2015) was launched by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak towards the end of 2011?
TSKR : Langkawi Tourism Blueprint 2011-2015 is a guideline for LADA to improvise its services towards the public. It will be focusing more on development while preserving Langkawi’s natural island. LADA will move even more aggressively to ensure that all initiatives in the Langkawi Tourism Blueprint are carried out successfully. We also believe that the Blueprint is the best platform for us to identify the projects that are needed to be implemented to make Langkawi as the top 10 tourist destinations in the world. Our action plans will have a focus on improving LADA’s administration, delivery and monitoring system in order to provide better services, infrastructure developments and opportunities for fulfilling social responsibilities.

T10 : The PM had mentioned that an investment of RM5 billion would be needed during the implementation period of Langkawi Tourism Blueprint and that the majority of the funding would be generated by the private sector. How much is that percentage (52%? 92%?)?
TSKR : As mentioned in the Blueprint, the investment will come entirely, 100% that is, from the private sector. We do provide some incentives to lure investors to Langkawi.

T10 : Are there any corporate players who have expressed an interest in going for the big projects in Langkawi? Is Taylor’s University’s Tourism Academy one of them? If yes, how will Langkawi benefit from this venture between the university and the Higher Education Ministry?
TSKR : Since the launch of the Blueprint towards the end of last year, there has been an interest by various parties to take up 15 potential projects. Amongst the interested parties are, Tradewinds Corporation Berhad and Khazanah Nasional Berhad. Taylor’s University’s Tourism Academy is also one of them and this will see a collaboration between them and the local community college in the enhancement of the academic syllabus. This will put the students in good stead to venture into the tourism industry.

T10 : Some 4,200 jobs are expected to be created during the implementation period of the
Langkawi Tourism Blueprint. Will this be significantly beneficial for the local people of Langkawi and how will this go towards fulfilling the PM’s vision of a high income economy in Malaysia?
TSKR : 4,200 jobs will be created every year and of course the local community will be given priority to take them up. With the appropriate training and coaching that they will obtain from the tourism academy, the level of competency as well as quality of the local community workforce will be raised. They can then expect to earn higher incomes for the quality services that they will be providing.

T10 : There is just about 4 years to put the blueprint in place. Would you have enough time?
TSKR : Yes, we do have enough time to put the Langkawi Tourism Blueprint in place.

T10 : In December last year, the Prime Minister had requested that LADA take immediate action to address the threat of erosion affecting Pantai Cenang, a popular beach with the tourists. Since then, what measures have been taken by LADA so far on this matter?
TSKR : Currently the department of town and regional planning together with the state and economic planning unit are in the process of finalising a special local plan for Pantai Cenang. It will address all the pertinent issues, including that of sanitation.

T10 : The ease of accessibility into Langkawi has always been one of the problems affecting Langkawi’s growth as a tourism destination. Although air charters have been one of the solutions, what more will, and can be done to help Langkawi reach its full potential among the world’s top 10 island destinations?
TSKR : There have been initiatives launched by Malaysia Airport Berhad to give incentives for charter flights programmes from around the world. The Langkawi Charter Flight Incentive Programme (LCFIP) aims to provide lead charterers with a fund to support promotional initiatives undertaken by the charterers to bring more tourists into Langkawi. It will be applicable for 4 years effective from 1 Januari 2012 to 31 December 2015.

More events in Langkawi to lure tourists

LANGKAWI: More world-class events will be held until July in a bid to ensure tourist arrivals to the resort island remains at a positive level.
Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) chief executive officer Tan Sri Khalid Ramli said the organising of cultural-related events was vital as the period from last month till July was known as the low season for tourists in Langkawi.

“We have to promote our cultures. Foreign tourists come here to see our unique cultures,” he said.
Khalid said among the iconic events lined up were Emping or Flakes Festival, International Noodles Festival, International Jet Ski Challenge and several international conferences.

Meanwhile, Khalid said Lada would also give extra focus on the cleanliness aspect in the island as it was among the important factors which would determine success in luring more tourists. - Bernama

AL :-
I suggest not making more event but lobbiying event which was suppose to be held in Langkawi such as Le Tour De Langkawi.
If cost is an issue to the organiser probably LADA can give some contribution (whenever held in Langkawi) in order for the event to be held in Langkawi.

First Integrated Fish Farming Project In Langkawi Soon

LANGKAWI, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- The Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) is paving the way for the development of commercial fish farming and aqua tourism by leasing its land as the first fish processing plant in the island.

Its chief executive officer, Tan Sri Khalid Ramli said Lada and a company specialising in marine fish farming, Aquagrow Corporation Sdn Bhd, had signed two agreements to develop the industry.

"In the first agreement, Lada leases three plots of land in the Ikan Bilis (anchovies) industrial area, Taman Nilam to Aquagrow to develop the first fish processing plant in Langkawi.

"The beach wil also be developed in Taman Nilam for its offshore cage operation near Pulau Langgun," he said at an agreement signing ceremony between Lada and Aquagrow, here Thursday.

He said for the second agreement, Lada would lease 30 units of unoccupied houses in Taman Nilam to Aquagrow as staff quarters for about 120 people.

Langkawi out to draw the sun, sea and surgery crowd

LANGKAWI has invited international investors to consider pumping in funds to develop the medical tourism sector on the island.
Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) chief executive officer Tan Sri Khalid Ramli said the island was taking its cue from Penang, which enjoys a multi-million ringgit turnover from healthcare-related services in its private hospitals.
He said Langkawi offered a suitable place for medical tourism due to its natural landscape.

“The island resort is generally good for rehabilitation due to its pristine hills and beaches. It can also act as a research incubator for the healthcare sector,” he said in an interview.
Since over a million people visit Langkawi annually, he said it would be good for tourists to also explore health matters during their stay.

Investors and researchers, he added, could tap the huge natural resources of the island including the sea cucumber (gamat) which has medicinal value.
Khalid, a former Penang state secretary and a former Implementation Coordination Unit director-general, has big plans for the island.
LADA was recently given RM5bil in federal grant to upgrade the status of Langkawi as a premier international tourism destination.

He said that besides medical tourism, LADA was keen to position Langkawi as an eco- tourism haven.
On the hospitality side, Khalid announced that LADA was also keen to lure investors for six-star property since there was a growing market for luxurious resorts.
LADA’s target is to record three million visitor arrivals by 2015 compared to an average of over one million in the last ten years.

AL :-
I might not be in line with the suggestion. Why want to make Langkawi as Medical tourism centre? Cant we just concentrate on what we have. Another idea injected in without having a deep through study & examination. LADA always like this..

Medical tourism will make Langkawi in direct competition with Penang & Kuala Lumpur. Waste medical management will be another problem.

I think LADA better take the steep to have fund to study & enhance capibility of Local doctors in combating decease related to tourism. (such as jellyfish problem & dengue). Rather than promoting another sector of tourism without even study the outcome good or note.

A-G: Langkawi auditorium roof poorly constructed

PETALING JAYA: The roof of a newly constructed auditorium in Langkawi was found to be leaking and was not constructed according to specifications.
According to the Auditor-General’s Report, the contractor used wood for the roof structure instead of steel as specified by the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada).
In Feb 2005, Lada approved RM4.5mil under the Ninth Malaysia Plan for the construction of the additional building as an auditorium that serves as a theatre for cultural performances and a silat teachers’ house to increase the attractiveness of Kota Mahsuri complexes.

“Auditors’ visits found the auditorium roof trusses were slanting to the right and might not be able to withstand the weight of the roof,” the report said.
No comprehensive soil investigation was done to identify the suitability of the land before the auditorium and silat teachers’ house design was drawn up, the report said.
“This causes high water retention in the auditoriums’ orchestra pit,” it said.
In reply, the Treasury said the water retention issue had been settled using a “water proofing” method and the floor level had been raised.

“However, the 1.5m water in the pit was caused by rain water that entered through an incomplete roof and not due to the rise of underground water,” it said, adding that the Works Department, which is now in charge of the project, had been informed of the problem.

AL :-
I urge the contractor to repair & replace the roof back at their own cost. I bet the roof or structure still have warranty. Before any catastrophic happen..

Kerajaan Rancang Beri Nafas Baru Kepada Langkawi

Langkawi Cambrian- Final Part

Picture & article by LADA
From then, during the Jurassic age of the dinosaours, this newly exposed land experianced severe alterrations due to chemical reactions and erosions and a series of  uplifting eruptions. The land was carved and gouged and hills were formed and valleys drained. Later during the extreme climatic conditions coinciding with the last ice ages(1.8 million to 10 thounsand years ago),sea levels were pushed up and down drastically as a result of glacial melting and global cooling. So now above the rainforest we find caves full of sea life : Shells, corals and ancient fossils some hundreds of feet above sea level.

Also among the island of marble, shale and limestone, we find caches of semi precious stones and crystals and even odd, cold water Brachiopod clam fossils. We see amzing towers of limestone soaring hundreds of feet above the sea at Tanjong Rhu, inland lakes as on Dayang Bunting where the roofs of huge caves have collapsed and strange mudstone boulders, which look like layered cakes, lie baking in the sun. This is the land that has been proved to be the oldest in the peninsular Malaysia the “Birthplace of the Nation” so to speak and the cradle of ancient life form which have evolved to some of the world’s most rare and unique species. But first came the jungle. Main Article Here.

Pulau Tuba : Aduan Rakyat - Sampah Jejas Industri Pelancongan Pulau Tuba

Inilah punca aduan dibuat penduduk. Cara mudah melupus sampah ibarat tangkap muat.

ABDUL RAHMAN SALLEH / YDP MAJLIS PERBANDARAN LANGKAWI

DATUK AZMAN UMAR / PENGURUS BESAR LADA.
Kalau ada permintaan baru kita buat. Kalau belanja besar2 orang tak pergi, kita sediakan fasiliti. You nak ke tak nak.

Buat permulaan, kitar semula diperkenalkan untuk mengurang beban sampah Pulau Tuba.

ROSLIM ABDUL RANI/PENDUDUK.

Seluruh penduduk Pulau Tuba sepakat, kita buat apa sahaja, termasuk mesyuarat.

Jika terdapat sebarang aduan berkaitan sebarang isu, hantarkan ke aduan rakyat@tv3.com.my.

Sila klik disini utk tgk berita penuh Aduan Rakyat. TV3 ambil berat.

AL :-
Terima kasih kepada Aduan Rakyat kerana dengar & menjadi tempat penduduk mengadu. Mmg masalah sampah kat Pulau ni dah jadi masalah besar.. Kesian.. Mungkin Pulau Tuba perlukan incinerator seperti di Pulau Langkawi..

Langkawi hotels vigilant over danger

HOTELS along the Pantai Cenang stretch in Pulau Langkawi have always taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety of their guests and visitors.
Casa Del Mar general manager Tom Blachere said the hotel makes it a must that all visitors are informed about  the jellyfish danger, when they check in during the mid-year season.
"At other times, we have it stated on our activity board in the lobby. As much as we need to keep them informed, at the same time, we do not want to alarm our guests."

He said the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) had provided adequate and updated information to all hotels. A spokesperson for another hotel on Pantai Cenang said several staff had undergone training on first aid and also on how to handle victims of jellyfish stings.
"We have qualified staff on standby at all times. For now, we have not put up any warning signage. However, we do inform our visitors during the jellyfish season."
She said the hotels and business operators along Pantai Cenang took part in gotong-royong exercises once a month to clean up the beach.

Jellyfish phenomena seasonal

PETALING JAYA: The jellyfish phenomena in Pulau Langkawi has caused fears among the residents and tourists in recent years. Experts say the problem there is seasonal and there are many contributing factors for their presence near the islands on the western coast of the peninsula.

A Department of Fisheries spokesperson said the jellyfish phenomena was not confined to Langkawi but throughout the western coast, including Penang and Pulau Pangkor, off Perak.
"The massive swarms of jellyfish not only affects tourism at Langkawi, Penang and Pangkor but also the running of a power plant in Manjung, Perak," said the spokesperson.

"Since this is a natural phenomena and also seasonal, it is beyond our capability to deal with it. We do not have any special task force to deal with jellyfish like what we did to the harmful alga bloom."
He said the department advised those in the tourism industry, especially seaside hotels, to be alert at all times of the jellyfish danger.
"Putting up warning signs on jellyfish at beach areas is also our responsibility."
Recently, a Swedish newspaper, Aftonbladet, reported a 45-year-old Swedish tourist had died from being Jellyfish phenomena seasonal Box jellyfish is poisonous and the sting from this species can sometimes be fatal to humans or other marine life.

The bell or cube-shaped jellyfish has four distinct sides and swimmers would not know they are bitten until they feel excruciating pain, and sometimes can die from it. The box jellyfish is not edible and are known for their sting which is rarely detected until the venom is injected,  but also because they are almost transparent. It is also found in the tropical oceans around northern Australia, in the waters of the Indo-Pacific region near Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Vietnam. Vinegar is the only known treatment for jellyfish stings and most beach resorts and lifeguards around the Andaman region now keep vinegar at all times.

Box jellyfish is poisonous stung by a jellyfish while swimming in Langkawi.
In April 2008, it was reported that a young Swedish tourist died from box jellyfish stings off Koh Lanta in Krabi, Thailand.

University Malaysia Terengganu's Institute of Oceanography deputy director, Dr Zainuddin Bachok, said there was a need to know the route of the jellyfish phenomena. He said there were several possible factors that may cause this, including the water currents and physical factors.

"It can be a migration process, where the water current moves and the jellyfish go along with it. Physical factors such as the water temperature also play a role. When the water in a certain area turns colder, the jellyfish seek to migrate to warmer waters where they tend to get reproductive."
However, he also pointed out the migration process was a norm in marine life.
Zainuddin suggested that continuous data monitoring be conducted to analyse the pattern of the jellyfish phenomena and from that, perhaps the main causes of the phenomena can be known for certain.
Langkawi Development Authority's (LADA) tourism division principal assistant manager, Azmil Munif Bukhari, told The Malay Mail the jellyfish phenonmena was seasonal and the situation was back to normal.
He said July was the season of the jellyfish in Langkawi.
Azmil said there were frequent gotong-royong exercises involving the hotels and other business operators to clean up the beaches.

"Recently, a team from Universiti Sains Malaysia conducted research on the matter and we are working closely with them."

Local media reports said the improper dumping of sewage and the disappearance of turtles caused an explosion in the jellyfish population last year. In first 21 days of July, there were 185 recorded cases of jellyfish attacks on tourists and residents, including fishermen. It was stated that best way to curb the number of jellyfish would be to prevent marine pollution. However, it was also mentioned there are problems in increasing the number of turtles, which feed on jellyfish, because of pollution along the beaches.

The Malay Mail
To be Continue.

AL: -
If its really seasonal then the expert should advise us when will be the peak season. Then we can alert the public on that period to be more cautious. Having said that is the Medical expert in Langkawi can handle such situation especially when it comes to box jellyfish.
