UKM To Undertake Scientific Research At Underwater World Langkawi

Story and Pix By Saiful Bahri Kamaruddin
LANGKAWI,  4 June 2012 - The National University of Malaysia (UKM) is to undertake scientific studies and research at the Underwater World Langkawi Sdn Bhd (UWL) theme park here.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) allowing for this was signed by UKM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Tan Sri Dato' Wira Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin and UWL Director, Puan Sri Fadzilah binti Md. Ariff here this morning. Chief Executive Officer of the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), Tan Sri Khalid Ramli was also a signatory.
UKM's Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development (Lestari) had organised the event as part of Langkawi's overall development as a GeoPark, through the Langkawi Research Centre (PPL) which had been actively studying the natural resources of the island since 2003.
Underwater World Langkawi is located at Pantai Cenang, a popular beach in the south of the main Langkawi island off the north western coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
It is one of the largest marine and fresh water aquaria in South East Asia. Since the start of its operation on 26 August 1995, it has become one of the must visit tourist destinations in Langkawi and has attracted a large number of foreign as well as local tourists.
Puan Sri Fadzillah said it had attracted over 10 million visitors who came to see some 400 species of marine life since its founding.

Marriage ceremony in penguin tank enters Book of Records

LANGKAWI: Wedding bells rang inside an aquarium full of penguins for two couples who opted to make a difference by sitting on makeshift dais at the Underwater World Langkawi (UWL) during their marriage ceremony.
Mohd Fazli Abdul Rahman, 31, who wedded Nursalmah Tajuddin, 27, and Mohd Shodri Bahador, 25 who tied the knot with Nurul Naziemah Rahim, 22, were employees of UWL.
They performed the ceremony in two separate aquariums, namely, the tank housing African penguins and Rockhoppers, while feeding the penguins in the tanks.
The event, recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records, was also witnessed by Langkawi member of parliament Datuk Abu Bakar Taib.
The spectacle, in the two tanks which lasted for 15 minutes, was accompanied by those handling the penguins, who acted as bridesmaids to ensure everything went smoothly, especially in terms of security of the couples.

The Tays @ Underwater World, Langkawi Geopark

We loved it! It’s so much better than the one in KLCC! Well, they do have more space and perhaps that helps a little. Nathan’s favorite and mine as well was the Penguins! He laughed and laughed when he saw them swim around. He banged on the glass wanting to touch them! Bliss!

More by Tay here..

Nice interesting picture by him...

Langkawi...surprises me!!! by Steward Saw.

Right after my What?!-have-to-go-again-for-3-months ruminant practical in Johore, I went to Underwater World Langkawi for my 2-week practical. Or in other words, from a remoted nothing-to-do-than-better-sleep-early farm to a heavenly lively island. (OMG, I can’t believe I just said that, after cursing Langkawi island for having nothing but expensive food and hot weather 6 years ago…well, things improve..hehe )
Indeed a super big eye-opener for me, since I have not much of exposure to marine and aquatic animals previously (All I can recall is all of my pet fish died under my care when I was small). And lots of management stuff to learn, and it is even complicated when each species requirement varies. From marine to brackish water and finally to freshwater fishes, we learn the feed type, environment parameter, anatomy and bits of treatment, filtration system and lots more. And basically those things that explain why my pitty pet fish died. Haih, ignorance kills them.
Anaklangkawi :-
When most of us visited & look at the animal & fish from outside the box. This blogger have the opportunity of the lifetime by handling the animals from within.. Such a nice experience indeed.
Great to know he has such a great practical in Langkawi Underwaterworld.

p/s: Never know before that Underwater World offers practical for students..

Langkawi Underwaterworld by mybabybay.com

The last time I set foot here was back in 2005. I was a little disappointed then because the Penguin section was under renovation.

Today, the place didn’t change much but I was impressed that the Penguin section is fairly big, 2 big sections for 2 types of Penguin. However when I looked at the Penguin, I feel sad for them because they are caged. They looked bored. Anyway that’s was the major part of the attraction in Langkawi Underwater World.

The rest were the usual sea creatures like coral fish, stingray, sharks, jelly fish and all types of fishes.
My children like to see the Penguin but only for a short while as they were distracted by a digital light game that shines on the ground. That was the most fun they have in there.

Please refer to her full article & nice pictures here..

I must say i agree with her with regards to this place should be a place you need to go when u visit langkawi.
