A tough shot

Shaky boat, low light, unpredictable flight patterns, Arun and Nila distracting me as they tried to get good shots. Difficult set up for catching a bird in flight. I shot almost 20 shots are so. Except for group shots this was the only one passable.

This was in one of those mangrove inlets in Langkawi where the boatmen tempt kites and eagles with fish as a kind of special show for the tourists. As soon as they hear the boat, scores of them swarm the place and it was total pandemonium. If you are there for the first time, it all moves so fast. Some fish thrown in the water and the boat moves away. All these birds swoop down and it is all over in minutes.

I understand there are some animal interest groups calling for a ban. But this is such a lucrative practice it is going to be difficult for that. It would need some serious education, wider perspective and creative options.

This is a Brahminy Kite. The next photo is much more detailed if you want a proper look. But that bird is sitting idle with a bored look as you can expect them to be in an aviary.

I was in langkawi for couple of days .. and i went on this island hopping trip :)..
and one of the stops is to go and feed eagles .. loved the experinece cos its the first time that i really see them that close.. i took millions of shots of them .. but it was hard really hard for me to coop with how fast they are... even with sequence shots didnt help at all.. we were on a speed boat .. but stoped ofcourse .. boat man was doing the feeding part and we were shooting :).. this is one of the best i got.. :)

Mangroves and mangrove dwellers, Langkawi, Malaysia

The first couple of days of my recent visit to Malaysia were spent on Langkawi, and on our first day we did a guided tour of the mangroves, a strange and fascinating eco system of its own. As we were told, very important for Earth's CO2 balance and, sadly but not surprisingly, highly endangered by human activities. I thought I'd share a few pictures with you. Not all of them came out as well as I would have liked from a technical point of few, but I still find them enjoyable. 

This eagle was sitting far overhead - I think the pic came out not too bad for being shot handheld from a boat.

White Bellied Sea Eagle - Burung Helang Langkawi

 

Picture of the day. White bellied sea eagle featured in Langkawi. Found in Langkawi Rainforest. For those bird lovers, this eagle quite rare to find in Langkawi. In Australia this bird is under Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The nest is a large deep bowl constructed of sticks and branches, and generally sited in large trees overlooking bodies of water. Cliffs are also suitable nesting sites, while those nests built directly on the ground are located on islands. That is why Langkawi is among the best place for the type of eagle breeds.

Picture of the day. The picture shows Brahminy Kite Eagle which is the icon for Langkawi. It is also known as Red-backed Sea-eagle. It is primarily a scavenger, feeding mainly on dead fish and crabs, especially in wetlands and marshland but occasionally hunts live prey such as hares and bats. More info in wikipedia.
