LANGKAWI is simply amazing. There’s always something new to see or experience no matter how many times one sets foot on this cluster of 99 islands on the western coast of Kedah.
With its diverse attractions, there’s never a dull moment. You can be on a boat among the mangroves gazing at majestic eagles soaring in the sky one moment and then find yourselves going into a cavern full of bats a few minutes later.

Langkawi Road to Enviromental Shame!!

LANGKAWI: Environmentalists are concerned over a road project, currently being built along Pantai Kok's rainforest-covered hill which they said is "sacrificing" century-old trees as well as marine lives along the island's shores.

Naturalist Irshad Mobarak said the road project is actually along a forest on a limestone hill which is also close to a mangrove forest and a popular tourist spot.

In an interview with The Mole Irshad said: “Langkawi has many rare species which is only seen in this part of the world and it will go extinct if the island is overdeveloped.”

“The island's biodiversity is amazing and eco-tourism is what draws tourists to the island. Islands work by different rules, if a habitat is lost, species will decline, “ he said.

Meanwhile, a source who lives and work on the island said the estimated cost of the road project is RM22 million and stretches about 1.2km long.

The project which started about a month ago is said to be built as a short cut to enable tourist to get to a nearby resort.

The source also said there were no proper signage’s to indicate that the area was under construction.

Irshad who is quite popular in Langkawi, having lived there for 26 years and championing the preservation of the island’s beauty and natural habitat, said the rainforest is vital in mitigating air pollution.

A member of the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), Irshad said developers should consider the environment and its natural aesthetics when undertaking their projects.

“When building roads, they must consider the wildlife, plants and marine lives, such as under planning for fisheries,’’ he said.

He also said local authorities must have better legislation and tighter enforcement for illegal loggings and poaching.

Another concerned environmentalist who wished to remain anonymous said sand from the road works which is being built, if unattended, could flow into the sea and badly affect marine lives.

“When the sand from the road works flows into the sea, the coral life will be affected.”

"Why do people come to Langkawi? People come here to unwind and enjoy its nature. Ecotourism is the fastest growing industry on the island. We are losing species just as we sit here."

The environmentalist who is passionate in preserving the island's marine life said while more stringent rules could be implemented, rules were still broken.

“People break the rules...competition between businesses will see bad practices in development projects. In terms of rules, it works well overseas. It can be done through many ways including through significant fines.’’

“Development is not necessary a bad thing, and I am not anti-development but I am definitely anti-ignorance. Everyone including the local authorities should be taught on preserving nature at all cost for the future generations," he added.

Langkawi Code of Conduct Launched by MNS

Islanders chart the way forward for a greener Langkawi – Code of Conduct  Launched
The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) today launched the Langkawi Code of Conduct, in conjunction with its 64th Annual General Meeting in Langkawi, Kedah.  The event was graced by Yang Berhormat Mohd Rawi Abdul Hamid, ADUN Air Hangat Langkawi at the Frangipani Resort, Langkawi. The Langkawi Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines and principles to work towards the sustainability of Langkawi’s environment and sustainable ecotourism.
Printed in both Bahasa Malaysia and English, this pamphlet was one of the milestones achieved and funded by a GEF/Small Grants Program (SGP) project entitled ”Conservation of Biodiversity in Langkawi Through Sustainable Eco –Tourism”. Beginning in October 2008, the Code was formulated through a series of awareness programs and stakeholder workshops organised by the MNS and LADA.
Speaking at a simple ceremony in Langkawi, MNS President, Prof. Dr Maketab Mohamed commented, ”Since our Scientific & Heritage Expedition in Langkawi in 2002,   MNS has always and continues to be proactive in promoting awareness and conservation of Langkawi’s natural heritage. We will continue to be active in this as we are concerned with regards to many issues especially on-going land-clearing activities that have now fragmented the forests of Langkawi. Fragmented forests in this case will cause a chain reaction and ultimately lead to the loss of unique flora and fauna of the area.”
He also added that they will meet with local authorities to discuss the full implementation of the Langkawi Code of Conduct and appealed to all stakeholders to lend support to all activities and stressed that sustainable development in the form of sound environmental practices, respect for nature’s gifts and the integration of scientific and local knowledge will ensure that Langkawi continue to offer something unique and sustainable through the ages.
The launch was attended by MNS members, local government agencies, and key tourism industry players.

AL :-
Its about time this thing come out. But.. Its just a code of Conduct. Will the participant & locals of Langkawi follow it? More explanation & awareness need to be made to promote this. All of Langkawi folks, bloggers, papers, & tourism, pages etc2 need to take part..

Conserve Natural Environment To Draw Tourists Call

LANGKAWI, June 5 (Bernama) -- Players in the tourism industry have to conserve and maintain Malaysia's natural environment, which is a major draw for tourists heading to the country, said Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit.

He said efforts to make the tourism sector a major source of income for the country would fail if these natural attractions were contaminated.

Dawos also urged the people of Langkawi to cooperate in taking care of public amenities and prevent vandalism as it would only cause losses for both the government and the people.

"It will frustrate plans to develop Langkawi's economy," he said when closing the 2011 Langkawi Geopark Carnival organised by the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) at Dataran Lang, here, Saturday night.

The carnival was held in conjunction with the fourth anniversary of Langkawi's status as part of the Global Geopark Network by Unesco in 2007.

Acts of green

Take ownership and ecological responsibility of our planet by pledging an act this Earth Day.
EARTH Day on April 22 is about working together to safeguard our planet. That is why this year’s theme is A Billion Acts of Green.
The campaign calls for people, organisations and corporations to commit to an act that helps reduce carbon emissions and promotes sustainability. It can be a simple gesture, such as drying your laundry in the sun, or immense, like picking up a million pounds of trash. One participant from New York has pledged to donate her two cars and will commute by public transport and walk.
Collectively, these acts will not only have an impact on global carbon emissions, but will also demonstrate the power of small everyday individual acts of green. The goal is to mobilise one billion acts of environmental service worldwide in advance of the global Earth Summit in Rio in 2012. So far, over 80 million actions have been pledged.

Some of the actions pledged: bike to school; take public transport; walk and cycle as much as possible; car-pool; eat more local food; become a vegetarian; wash clothes in cold water; take shorter showers; stop buying bottled bottle; switch to LED lights; turn off PCs and lights when not in use; stop buying individually packed snacks; run ceiling fan instead of the air-conditioner; take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Many have also committed to: eliminate use of pesticides and toxic cleaning products; plant a garden at home or in school; conduct a coral reef clean-up; plant trees; and initiate a Meatless Monday programme at school.
From Malaysia, at least two groups have made pledges.

The group Waterfall Survivors (waterfallsurvivors.blogspot.com) aims to round up 1,000 volunteers to clean up Sungai Tua Recreational Park in Selangor on April 24. The group’s Save Our Waterfalls campaign stresses the importance of preserving our natural environment.

Another action is by Starwood Hotels & Resort which owns four properties in Langkawi (The Andaman, Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa, Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort and Four Points). It will plant 1,000 trees at Sungai Bukit Hantu on the island. Local trees which are rarely grown nowadays, such as cashew nut and Malaysian grapes, will be planted.
The first Earth Day was held in 1970. Though it initially was largely focused on the United States, the event is now celebrated worldwide. – By Tan Cheng Li - The Star

"Ingat Bungkus; Ingat Bekal..."

Simply means "Remember container (referring to a food container) when you think of take-away".

This idea was given to a five-star resort last year in conjunction of the Environment week and they did it. It was a very easy task to do and zero cost. The staff gathered at a pasar malam (night market) armed with their own food containers, used plastic bags or cloth bag for storage bags, tiffin carriers, etc. In a troop, they marched down the lane of the night market and took away their dinner using their containers. That was only for one day and how effective or impactful can that be?

A pasar malam stall
Not until last year when I met this amazing local lady, Puan Zuraidah; through an invitation to their Raya open house by her brother, Razak.  Puan Zuraidah is currently an active committee member with Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Langkawi chapter. As we chatted during the open house, she spoke with passion of her dream to see Langkawi people doing green practices which led to our idea about gathering an army to march down the pasar malam lane with food containers. She was keen about this and not only we spoke about it but she did all the work to materialize this event.

Why pasar malam (the night market) is the target?

Great Article by my friend WChinner.. Do visit his blog for more details..
Anaklangkawi :-
I write this as a reminder especially for travelers & locals in Langkawi. As we all know ( i guess so) Langkawi is just a small island with no incinerator (at the moment). But we do have landfill which filled up quite fast. Two days ago the local television talks about terrible rubbish problem in Pulau Tuba. Its quite a shame.. Both the authorities, tourists & locals need to take part in the effort the preserve the surrounding of Langkawi.
Sometimes we don't have the guts to even talk to persons that throw rubbish. We as individual should make a stand to protect & preserve Langkawi. As the local always says.. "Kalau bukan kita sapa lagi? " (if its not us who else will do it).. Let us make Langkawi as the 1st Island in Malaysia that can be Plastic Fre & Rubbish Free.

Exploring the Natural Splendor of Langkawi Malaysia

Exploring the Natural Splendor of Langkawi Malaysia
Langkawi is a small island-district located offshore Malaysian mainland. It is one of the most visited destinations in this part of Southeast Asia. Its natural endowments and rich cultural heritage draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to its coastlines every year. It is also easily accessible from the equally popular tourist destinations of Singapore and Thailand.
Langkawi is adored mainly for its exquisite beaches, azure blue waters and powdery white sand shores. Cenang beach is a favorite tourist jaunt where you can easily get lost in the crowd.  It also has the highest concentration of commercial establishments catering to the needs of the throng of visitors for accommodation, food and shopping. More tranquil and quiet alternatives include Tanjung Rhu Beach, Burau Bay and Kok Beach

Protecting Langkawi’s splendour By CHRISTINA CHIN

COME March, the Langkawi Country Code, a guideline for sustainable eco-tourism for Langkawi, will be available for all local authorities, tourism operators and stakeholders.
Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Langkawi branch chairman Eric R. Sinnaya said the code hoped to prevent natural attractions from being ruined by tourism so that everyone could enjoy long-term benefits.

“Tourism can really improve the locals’ standard of living but we must not kill the goose that lays the golden egg,” he said.
“We can have the greenest is- lands in the world if everyone works together.

“Two decades ago, 95% of the Langkawi islands was green — now we are down to about 60%,” he said.
He said although NGOs could prepare a guideline of best practices, the state and local authorities’ support was needed to endorse and enforce the code, adding that the ecology of Langkawi was very sensitive and needed protection.

He said the Pulau Payar Marine Park was a good example of how tourism had resulted in garbage pollution and coral damage.

The code addresses the conservation of existing tropical rainforests, mangrove forests, coastal eco-systems, bio-diversity and landscapes; garbage management; reduction of pollution and usage of natural resources and adoption of ethical business models by all parties.
The code was among the out-comes of the ‘Conservation of Biodiversity in Langkawi through Sustainable Eco-tourism’ project funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and implemented by the MNS.

Anaklangkawi :-
Its about time  this code of conduct or best practices propose by MNS & LADA is no point if the local authorities will not endorse it. It will be just another piece of paper submitted. Anyhow.. I applause MNS effort to proposed such paper.

I really hope that Ministry of Tourism, Kedah Government & Local Authorities support & make the code of conduct / guidelines proposal as compulsory or make it a law. Enforce it then we'll see changes..

Pulau Payar tercemar teruk

Most Constituencies Have Yet To Hold 'friends Of The Environment' Activities

LANGKAWI, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry is asking all members of parliament to implement Rakan Alam Sekitar (Friends of the Environment) activities to create public awareness on environmental conservation in their respective areas. Its deputy minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said to date only Maran, Langkawi and a few parliamentary constituencies in Sabah and Sarawak had launched their Rakan Alam Sekitar programmes.

"We find that many parliamentary areas have yet to organise such programmes and we hope all MPs will speed it up so that the people right from the grassroot level will together share the responsibility of caring for the environment," he said after launching a Rakan Alam Sekitar seminar for the Langkawi constituency, here, Monday.

Kurup said the programme must be implemented in all 222 parliamentary areas as each area was given an allocation of RM30,000 by his ministry to implement it.He said the Rakan Alam Sekitar set-up in each parliamentry area would be chaired by the MP and the representatives from the Department of Environment or the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) would be appointed to the secretariat.

"Representatives of the local authorities, non-governmental bodies, resident associations and individuals chosen by the MP will also be on the committee," said Kurup. He said the setting up of Rakan Alam Sekitar since last June was a government effort to provide information on environmental issues and to increase public awareness on the importance of protection and conserving the environment.-- BERNAMA
